BMW Dixi: Where It All Started
Talking about BMW cars is not complete without talking about the first car ever produced by BMW, the BMW Dixi. First made in 1920s, the BMW Dixi was indeed a landmark in automobile industry. Some of the cars produced back then can still be used until today – signaling BMW’s utter concern for built quality – and are part of many avid automobile collectors’ collections.
Dixi was initially a car brand or Eisenach , producing their own cars until the recession hit in early 1920s. They then agreed to a licensing agreement with Austin Motor Company to produce a variant of Austin 7. Dixi’s manufactured DA-1 3/25PS was first released in December 1927. Of course, the car had many similarities to Austin 7.
BWM’s involvement in the automotive industry began when the company bought Eisenach in 1928, along with the right to produce Dixi cars. The Dixi was quickly released as BMW Dixi – with several improvements to the design, mostly minor ones – but the label Dixi was soon dropped. BMW started their own branding by adding the code DA-2 to the next release of updated BMW Dixi, the BMW 3/15 DA-2.
The DA-2 is still known as BMW Dixi until today. Many people consider the improvements made by BMW as superbly done, adding features that no other car manufacturers had at the time. Since the release of DA-2, BMW continued to develop state of the art cars to satisfy its customers. If you love driving any of BMW’s cars today, you should know that the BMW Dixi was how it all started.
